Newts, what to do?

| I just found a great crested newt (I think that is what it is as it has an orange belly), submerged in a waterbowl in the garden. Fearing that the water would just freeze over tonight, I emptied some of the water and placed the bowl in the shed. Did I do the right thing. Is it hibernating? Do newts eat flies? What is the best thing to do with it, in this freezing weather. Can anybody help! thanks, Diana |

| Hi Diana, I think you have to report it, if you have found one, here is a link with information, on it. Wendy Woo will be able to let you know what to do, when she comes on. They are a protected spieces. http://www.herpconstrust.org.uk/GCN.htm |

| Hello Diana, I have many newts in my ponds and they do seem to stay submerged, the crested variety are quite rare, but nonetheless quite tough. | |

| You need to report your find I think. There are some helplines here:- http://www.froglife.org/GCNCH/13.pdf Here is a salutory tale about the protection of the great crested newt:- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-546432/Couple-barred-living-1million-house-year-protected-newts-flood.html And a lovely little video about them:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/species/Great_Crested_Newt This Wikipedia entry sums up the law:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Crested_Newt |
