I am a retired Widow, living alone with my old cat, Cleo, in a semi-detached 1970s house. (I have two lodgers Monday-Thursday but do not socialise with them.) I live in a Garden City and my garden is a typical suburban one, approximately 50ft long x 25ft wide with a central lawned area and where I have a swing-seat. I have a shed but not a greenhouse. I am a keen gardener but not a good one because I lack patience. I grow mainly perennials supplemented by summer and winter bedding plants that nowadays I buy in plugs rather than raising them from seed. My patio area is in shade during the winter months but gets the sun for a few hours from early spring to late summer. I have large tubs on the patio containing red and white Camellias, a Yucca filamentosa, Bay, Holly and a Korean fir tree. The bottom of my garden, where I have a gravelled hot area, is SW facing and gets the sun until sunset and is where I grow grasses Cannas and other lilies.br /br /br /br /br /br / br /br /br /br /br /br / I have many containers including some very large tubs that contain trees like Catalpa, Cotinus, Ceanothus and Pittosporum. On my fences and three arches I have 6 varieties of clematis, with another 2 in my front garden. In late spring I have a good display of late tulips which I successfully grow from year to year in large window boxes, replenishing the soil and feeding in Autumn. This enables me to put them out of the way to die down when it is time to put summer bedding in my borders. My pond is made from a large beer barrel with a central bridge upon which there is a stone Heron that spouts water. Frogs and newts inhabit the pond but do not mate in there, perhaps because it is too small. My front garden is very small, arid and hot and contains only Sedums and Lavenders - I hate working there so it tends to get neglected. br /br /br /br /br /br / br /br /br /br /br /br / My garden is far too square but as I moved to this house when I was already 65, I lack the energy to make structural changes and try to ring the changes by moving my many tubs around. br /br /br / br /br /br / (PS: 2009: I now have a couple of gardeners who visit once a fortnight and do the heavy work such as mowing, hedge trimming, leaf clearing etc. And I have fewer containers and more perennials.) br /br /br /br /br /br / |

| My garden in Summer
This is a view of my garden from the Patio. I have around 100 containers in which I grow a variety of plants which require special soil conditions. At the bottom of the garden is a gravel 'hot bed' where I grow Cannas, other lilies and grasses. This is also where I store my large window boxes of late tulips. To the right is my half-beer-barrel pond, surrounded by various pond marginal plants and with a Heron spouting fountain. The pond is home to frogs and newts and is visited by blackbirds. My cats are tolerant of my other wildlife and Cagney loves to sit under a large, holey sun-hat watching their comings and goings !

| My cats Cagney & Cleo
Cagney is part Siamese, part Tabby and is very affectionate. Cleo is a rescued black moggy who is very nervous but playful. They both love to be in the gaden with me - Cagney beside me in my swing-seat and Cleo in the shade beneath the coffee table. Neither of them are hunters so birds often feed nearby.
